Evaluation: Institutions
If I was to use a large publishing company such as Bauer, I would probably have high quality products being printed to meet deadlines. The audience would trust the publishing company as it is very popular and they produce a large amount of different magazines. A disadvantage to this would be that I would not know a great deal about the process or know who I was working with as I would only be one of many to them, and there would be no time for them to get personal with me and what I do. This gives an advantage to having a small media institution distribute my product as the customer care would be much more personal and I would be able to work with others one on one. The cons to this would be that the company would not be able to print large quantities or magazines due to lack of equipment, funds or resources and the company could easily go bankrupt, leaving me with problems. There would almost likely be a large difference in the cost between the two publishers. If I was to use a larger publishing company, a lot of money would come from advertising (selling space within my magazine) as well as just circulation as the publishing company would be well known and trusted to deal with advertisements due to having used them before. This is a big advantage because usually the same amount is made from advertising as it is circulation. A smaller publishing company would not be able to provide this. Using the Audit Bureau of Circulation website I was able to work out approximate values. My magazine price is £2.99 and if I multiplied that by the number of copies sold (which im estimating at 10,000) the total amount of money made would be £299,000. The amount NME is paid for one full page advertisement for example is £6, 920. If there was to be 40 pages of advertisements, this final cost would be £276,800. If you compare the two prices they work out to be very smiliar.
